Warwick Family Chronicles
Chapter XX

Back Against The Wall

Jeremiah

Roscoe and Roland needed not to have worried, Jack sent word that Octavia was not well and would not be in for a few days. Octavia was not under the weather she had some exciting news her brother Ethan had a plan to help her and he would be here within a week, her house sorely needed tending to. Her daughters needed new clothing and she really needed to get things ready for her brother. She didn't want Quentin to know there would be too many questions.

Maylissa and Delilah were working in the garden under the shade and discussing their mothers odd behaviour.

"Sissy I do not understand why mother must clean so, and why the garden must be so neat, we have been keeping the garden nice since we were five," Delilah sighed.

"I don't know either sissy, and Annabelle and Monique are worn out watching after Jeremiah to make sure he doesn't mess up the house." Maylissa said thinking life just got stranger since their father was gone.

Lissa can you please watch him for a bit I need to clean up the milk he spelt, and Anna is picking up the pots he pulled out of the cupboard." Monique sighed thinking her brother was going to end up bruised if he pulled the mischeif on Lissa he pulled on them.

"Sure," Lissa said thinking what Jeremiah needed was a good switching, mother spoiled him dreadfully.

She then pretended to shoot Annabelle who had been eavesdropping on her and Delilah as usual.

The Search

Miles away Quentin had spent the night camped in the woods he could see smoke from camp fires, and knew he was close to the Indians. He wished he would have asked Keno the word for friend. All he could do was hope that he could ge close enough to spot his father. He had watered Posey and staked her out, glad that he had taught her that as a foal.

In the distance he saw smoke of the village and roof tops throught the trees.

He did not even see Chayton, Lokan, and Toma lurking near him as he crept near the village he saw some women near a garden and a couple of children but no men or even older boys.

"What is this?" Toma asked, only one person.

"Yes he is alone," Lokan said he had double checked.

"What is he doing?" Chaytona asked, the men shrugged, he was unarmed.

Quentin moved closer to the camp wondering what he should do.

Suddenly he was grabbed, and he cried out with start, he had not even seen the three of them.

"I got him!" Chayton crowed proudly.

They hauled him towards the people near the garden.

"Where is Saban, we caught this white man snooping." Lokan said.

"The dogs alerted us someone was in the woods," Chayton said for some reason he did not like this boy and was pushing him around a bit.

"Saban and some men are bringing logs from the woods," Wenday said.

"Ouch, stop," Quentin cried, he had lost a shoe and they were frightening him, "I am looking for my father."

Quentin realized they couldn't understand him, they didn't speak English like Keno did. He also realized the young one wanted to hurt him and bad, he was so scared suddenly he couldn't think.

The boy shoved him and Quentin's temper flared he hit Chayton and the two were fighting, the two men laughed so hard, Chayton could not be hit, he was too fast.

Wenday did not like this she picked up a melon and threw it at Chayton beaming him in the head.

"Take this do not hurt him, he is of the tribe of Jayman." Wenday cried.

"Ouch that hurt, what is wrong with you Wenday," Chayton cried.

"That young man is not to be harmed not until Saban says," Wenday said angrily.

"Jayman, Keno said he was here," Quentin said, the girl had said the name that had knocked him out of his panic and fright.

The two men and Chayton looked at each other, as Coryn came up.

"Yes please, Jayman, my father," Quentin pleaded looking at the third man beyond an odd shaped building glaring at him. This man would kill him. The other too looked kind, This other one looked mean.

"Put him in the lodge for grain and dry grass and bar the door," Coryn said blandly.

"Jayman," Quentin pleaded, then he looked at Wenday, she was so beautiful, strong and proud.

She reminded him of Maylissa in the way she carried herself and the way she looked at him with kindness in her eyes.

Quentin knew this was the wrong place and time but he was in love, he knew her name was Wenday.

"Wenday," Quentin said pointing to her, then to himself "Quentin."

"please don't hurt him, I think he came to see Jayman," Wenday said, thinking men could be so dense sometimes.

He was put into something that looked like a corn crib but stronger, with hay from the spring cutting.

He knew he was a prisoner.

His only hope was his father. Only he did not know his father was away cutting wood and would not be back until tomorrow.

Wenday did and she went to look for Kivak, knowing he could talk to pale skins in their language.

"Kivak my father has one of Jaymans people locked in the horse food place and will not let him out you must go speak to him and make him not afraid, Saban will not allow him to be harmed. Also find out why he is here," Wenday said smiling at Kivak.

"Really I will go at once and speak to him." Kivak said smiling.

Chayton and Kivak had always liked her, but she knew Takota wished Chayton, and Nona wished Kivak.

Kivak smiled, and wondered what one of Jaymans people was doing here, and why had he come, to kill Jayman or to warn him. He had to be of great care.

"I am Kivak come talk," Kivak said entereing the feed storage building Quentin was being held in by Coryn.

"You speak English," Quentin said amazed, as he sat on one of the skins the young man had brought.

"A bit, Why do you find Jaymen?" Kivak asked bluntly.

"He is my father," Quentin said.

"Father, I know not this word," Kivak said studying Quentin.

"You know word baby?" Quentin asked thinking how he could explain this to Kivak.

"Yes baby, child, man, woman, girl, boy," Kivak said proudly.

"I am child of Jayman," Quentin said smiling.

"Ah, you are of his family," Kivak said looking at Quentin he did have those same blue eyes, and he did look like Jayman.

"Yes, I am his son," Quentin said smiling.

"Like Jayrun, his baby with Daygleesha," Kivak nodded, and wondered why Jayman had never told him about this son.

"Kayton," Kivak said then shook his head and tried, "Key-ton, Wee-ton, and Wen-ton."

"Quentin," Quentin repeated, "My father has a son?"

"Yes he is a baby boy," Kivak said, thinking he liked this Quentin son of Jayman.

After a long talk Kivak remembered what Saban and Lunan had said about Jayman hurting his head and not remembering why white men were trying to kill him.

Wenday had kept busy with chores that would keep her near by when Kivak came out she went to him and said, "Who is this white man."

"He is the son of Jayman, he comes to find him and warn him I believe something about his mother I do not understand," Kivak said.

"So Jayman has another wife, with the white tribe, it is done often," Wenday said, but wrinkled her nose with slight distaste the thought of sharing a mate with another woman.

Jayman's Son

The next day Kivak was required to be with Wenday when she went to feed the prisoner, and she did not mind. Crono did not trust Chayton to do this and besides Kivak knew the young man's language. Wenday was learning quickly as well she had been mindly interested in Jayman, but this young man looked at her with such deep respect and warmth she was intrigued.

Jayman was told by Spring that they had caught some white man, and his name wasy Keyton and he was asking for Jayman. Jayman thought the name met nothing, but maybe this person could help him with those odd dreams he had.

The man was being held by Coryn, who Jayman had built a nice horse feed storage for but still had never warmed up to him or approved of his joining with Daygleesha.

"He's in there," he told Jayman and Saban. Motioning to the only building with a door sturdy enough to keep in someone, the grainery.

Jamie wondered who it could be some bounty hunter, he had heard they hired them to bring back servants.

"Father!" Quentin said as Jamie entered.

The blank stare his father gave him back sent chills down his spine, his father looked at him like one might look at a stranger.

"It is me Quentin, I am your son and Octavia is your wife, you have four daughters Maylissa, Delilah, Annabelle and Monique, and another son Jeremiah he will be three in a few days. Remember mother was with child when you left," Quentin said.

"Octavia, Quentin," Jayman repeated the names, like a man repeating magical words from another land.

"Yes I am Quentin, I was just eleven when you left I am now fourteen," Quentin said looking despertly from Wenday to Kivak for answers.

"I think Jaymen fall or get hit on head when I find him, our medicine man say he not remember, once when Nobar fell off his horse he not remember people for days, just the old ones, none of the younger ones.

Quentin had heard stories of people not remembering things after sickness.

"Quentin is my son, Octavia is my wife, three years are right, are there men looking for me," Jamie said now clearly remembering the child and the night he almost died in the stable fire.

"Yes," Quentin said smiling.

"They tried to kill me, red beard tried to stop them," Jamie said the memory was more dream then actual memory.

"Your friends were worried we looked for you for days, me and Roscoe, even Piper," Quentin said, almost feeling tears bite his eyes at the mention of the dog. Piper was gone now, leaving many of his puppies with Sugar.

"Piper our big white dog, he took you out of the fire." Jamie said wide eyed.

"We go now," Wenday said.

"Yes," Kivak agreed, and added in English, "We go if you need anything call."

"We will," Jamie said, and both he and Quentin thanked them.

"Listen father, mother is falling apart. You have to go home to her, she needs you. At frist she held up good, but now she is crying she barely eates and I don't know what to do, when the boy Keno told me about you here, I didn't know what to do other then follow him and his father back here," Quentin sobbed, glad Wenday had gone.

"Octavia, oh how I love her, but I didn't remember her or you being here, I didn't remember much after our wedding, we must have been here some time," Jamie reasoned, and stared at Quentin, and knowing it was his son, but why couldn't he remember.

The Heir

"I say driver are you sure this is the right house, where the Warwicks live?" the passenger asked.

"Yes sir," Parnum said, and glanced at his man Fredrick.

"Wait then and I will have the servants fetch the baggage," the man said.

Parnum rolled his eyes and agreed to wait.

"We unhitch two horses to drive down this narrow road for him and he treats us like that," Fredrick sighed.

"There is something fishy about him," Parnum said, "You and I need to keep an eye out on him, I will pay you to help me."

"Why are you so protective of the Warwicks?" Fredrick asked.

"Lets just say I owe a debt to James," Parnum said.

"I thought you didn't know anyone here," Fredrick said, but then the man returned and paid them and took his own luggage.

"Oh Ethan let me look at you," Octavia laughed as Ethan kissed her hand as he used to do as a boy.

Octavia was overjoyed to see her brother, it had been almost fifteen years.

"You look good what a nice suit," Octavia said smiling.

"This old thing, where are the children I brought them gifts," Ethan said smiling.

"They are in the garden," Octavia said, "I sent them there when I heard the coach.

"I see and you really live here?" Ethan said looking around, it was not bad inside, but the outside looked like a bunch of trees that needed sawed and finished.

"Sure, Jamie built this house for me, with some help from friends," Octavia shrugged and studied her brother.

"Well tell me about this man and the money you owe me then I want to meet Jamie's sons," Ethan said.

"I wonder who that man is," Annabelle said.

"Our uncle Ethan, now come away from that window," Maylissa ordered.

"Why are you so bossy," Monique asked.

"Sissy why do you think he is here?" Delilah asked, something about this worried her and she didn't know why.

"I don't know the dogs really barked when he came up, and the coach has been here before dropping off Roland and Jack and other friends." Maylissa said, she knew the friendly redheaded driver Mr. Parnum he had chased some boys away that were harrassing her and Todd once. The dogs liked him too, he always had some hardtack or jerky for them.

"And just where is Quentin it looks like if we are made to meet this uncle he should be too," Delilah said.

Maylissa shrugged thinking about the stories Quentin had told her about Piper when he was young how he could tell good guys from bad.

"Are you sure you won't come back to England with me, I have a ship chartered to leave for Bristol in a fortnight, well ten days for it took me four days to get here," Ethan said. "Really that long," Octavia said, thinking he must have rode in the coaches just half a day. "Yes my darling sister, you live in such a remote part of this colony." Ethan said.

"No my life is here," she said, "I think I shall never see England again, a woman is a lot more free out here, I would be wearing widows weeds and our father would be seeking suitors but who would want a woman with six children."

"Jamies brother died of the pox, and the Duke grows old and weak, he is sixty now, and he wants an heir, a new duke, by lineage that would be Quentin with Jamie . . . " Ethan started.

"There is no way you would get Quentin to go back with you, he is very independant," Octavia laughed, and then went to check on the stew. Go to the garden and introduce yourself supper is almost done.

Ethan nodded, he had not wanted Quentin anyway, a fourteen year old would be to independant and too hard to control, he wanted Jeremiah the baby.

Later after the children were in bed, Ethan told Octavia he only had a day here, he had booked quarters on a ship heading out in five days, in case he could not presuade her to come with him. Octavia was grately disappointed.

Meanwhile Jamie rode Posie at a light trot, he was surprised how much he could remember after his and Quentins talks over the past week. He had asked Quentin to borrow Posey, and to stay with Jayrun, Daygleesha was being difficult and threatened to give the baby away. She was already putting Jamies things out for Kivak, Quentin, and the others to take to the corn crib. She was very upset with him.

Jamie tied Posie in the side yard and started for the house, then something caught his eye, and he gasped.

Inside the house he had built, his wife was hugging another man, he turned away.

"You will have no regrets Octavia, Jeremiah will have it all, the best education, money can buy, and the fortune of the Warwicks, not to mention the title of Duke," Ethan said hugging his sister, "You will have your money to pay Mr. Timberlane we will go see him tomorrow."

Octavia laughed as he hugged her again as did he. Ethan would be the boys guardian after the old man died, that was why he was in such a rush to get back. The duke had to put everything in writing for Jeremiah. The duke was very ill and Ethan waged that the duke would be dead before Jeremiah would celebrate his fourth birthday.

"I can't believe I am letting you take my baby," Octavia cried tears in her eyes. But it was the best for Jeremiah.

Jamie could not believe this Quentin had told him she had no men, but Quentin had been living at the Inn. Oh God he had lost both of the women he had loved.

Jamie was too upset to notice he was being watched. Later he would wish he would have charged in there, but he was too hurt, he blamed himself. He had found another woman, why shouldn't she find another man, he was young and handsome, and someone Jamie did not recognize at all.

The next say they went by to pay Mr. Timberlane, he was not home but his son took the money and wrote a receipt for it and his mother and one of the men witnessed it.

Later as he prepared to leave Ethan held Jeremiah who seemed to have no idea what was going on but liked Ethan's attention.

"Say goodbye to your sisters and mother, give them kisses bye," Ethan said.

"Bye bye," Annabelle cried.

"Bye Jeremiah," Monique cried, and looked at her mother pleadingly, "Does he have to go?"

Ethan nodded and said with a smile, "Maybe you can come visit him when your grown up."

"Bye son," Octavia sobbed, how could she do this, and where was Quentin she had sent word for him to come out twice, to see his uncle before he had to go back.

"Good bye little one, I shall miss you so," Delilah sighed.

"Bye Jeremiah I love you," Lissa cried as they got into the coach.

When they were gone Octavia hugged each of the girls, kissed their cheeks, and gave them a piece of candy Ethan had brought, but when she got to Lissa, Lissa pushed her away.

"How could you do this?" Lissa demanded.

"I will never complain about him again, please mummy go get him back, he is our little brother," Delilah said, suddenly realizing Lissa was not lying they would never see Jeremiah again.

"I am never speaking to you again mother," Lissa spat and stormed off.

Octavia burst into tears, they didn't understand. It was go back to England to a life of gentile poverty or stay here where her daughters would have a chance at happiness, a happiness she had before Jamie had gone missing.

"Oh mummy she will get over it, she will, sissy has a dreadful temper she does," Delilah sighed, and hugged her mother.
