Warwick Family Chronicles
Chapter XLIII

Rescue

Lost Boy

Delilah was alone crying in her bed, her father had taken Nathaniel home with him, thinking his daughter needed rest.

Lewis had waited for his friend to leave, and knew what room Delilah was in.

"Delilah," Lewis called softly, and looked around the hall of the inn, if the walls of these rooms could talk, Ferrin, Lucy Chastain, Jenny Coates, oh so many had he had his way with here.

"Yes come in Lewis please," she sniffed.

Lewis came in and shut the door, and sighed, "If you are angry with me I would understand . . ."

"No I wanted you, it is Julius' fault, if he would have kept me happy the way father keeps mother happy I would not have had to turn to you, oh Lewis please come to me, hold me, that insane man has my young son," she sobbed.

"I know we have out looking," Lewis sighed.

Lewis lost it he should have gone home to Astrid, she knew he was out looking for Julius, he had made sure that Daniel had sent someone to tell her.

Delilah obviously needed him.

He gave in and went to her, and well nature took its course, and Lewis spent the night he was exhausted. He was not used to so much riding and being in so much stress.

"Feeling a bit better now?" Lewis asked.

"Yes Lewis, I love you so much," she said sleepily.

The next morning Jamie was going to look in on Delilah, Annabelle said, "Let her sleep, I have some nice tea that Roland brought from Boston, it is just the thing."

Jamie looked at his daughter wearily if he had been sharper of mind with plenty of rest he would have noticed something wrong in her manner.

Annabelle knew Lewis was in there, the last thing she needed was her father and Lewis to tangle, they needed everyones attention on finding Julius and Ross.

Lissa had confided in her about Lewis and Delilah, and the fact Nathaniel was most likely Lewis' child. When she had seen Lewis last night when she was checking on Monalisa she knew what was going on.

"Roland is back?" Jamie said with relief.

Yes he is here at the inn," Annabelle said.

"Wonderful," Jamie said.

"Yes and he sent a rider to the fort for help," Annabelle said, thinking she should be checking rooms instead of sitting here having tea with her father.

"Good," Jamie sighed.

"Wonderful to see you Roland, good to see you back as well Warren," Jamie said to the men.

The men came into the public room, and Jamie noticed there was Warren Martin back from his stint as a soldier playing chess with Jay a child Annabelle and Adam had adopted.

"I always wanted to be constable of this town, I was told the one you have now is worthless." Warren said.

You can say that again." Olaf said.

"Here here," someone said.

"After my grandson is found we will call a town meeting. Right Roland?" Jamie asked, Roland was now head of the town council.

"Yes, Warren welcome home," Roland said smiling, he almost had everyone he wanted in offices, people who would do the work needed to make Amberly thrive.

"By the way has anyone seen our father is he passed out somewhere?" Olaf asked.

Jamie and Lewis looked at each other, and then at Roland, Roland caught the look and wondered what was going on.

"I am sure father is fine," Roland said thinking obviously he was or Jamie would have said something.

"We need to talk," Jamie whisphered after Olaf wondered off to look at Jamies new plant.

Lewis slipped off he had to ride to the fort to talk to Ferrin about the boy, this is something he really didn't want to do but felt he must.

Jamie explained to Roland what had happened, and the actions that he and Lewis had taken.

"Oh so that was why Lewis was slinking around like a dog gone bad and been at the chickens?" Roland asked.

Jamie nodded, Lewis had been acting a bit strange.

Meanwhile Neils was not doing so well besides shaking and being sicker then he could ever remember.

Things were coming out of the walls, and he was hungry sort of, when he wasn't sick, he had no idea where he was.

"Neils," Oly said softly.

"Daddy," Neils cried, "Daddy I will be good take me home. I am sorry I ran off."

Oly sat down beside him on the bench and shook his head.

"Sorry I cannot do it, you have to stay here until the craving has left you I put some food on the table for you." Oly said.

"I am sorry I am bad daddy, I love you," Neils said, "I never told you that, and I was always a bad son, I am so sorry."

"Eat your food, in a few days you will be better and can go home," Oly said. Then he seemed to disappear.

Neils started to eat tears flowing down his ravaged face, the face Roland the child had looked into with such love.

Roland stood there for a bit praying for his recovery, watching him eat, Neils no longer seemed to realize he was there, then hurried out of the celler.

Well how is he?" Jamie asked.

Roland closed the door softly and replaced the lock.

"Jamie he thinks I am grandfather," Roland said softly, "Has he lost his mind? Will he have to stay down there forever?"

"No just until the dementia is over, he is eating that is a good sign," Jamie said.

"How did you know to do this?" Roland asked, thinking his father had done nothing but bad mouth Jamie.

Some London doctor had written an article about it, and Jamie had read it in one of the books that he had bought when he and Octavia had gone to Portland last.

"I need to get back to th search for my grandson," Jamie said thinking he would check in with Pharnum who had sent notices out to all the constables and may have recieved queries back. The man could barely hobble about but he was determined to help.

"Of course I will get my uncles and brothers and we will help," Roland agreed, "Thank you for caring about my father."

Lewis arrived at Ferrins house, he had not seen Ferrin for some time due to Ferrin very seldom leaving the fort. Now that he was the General he was busy all the time.

Molly and Ferrin had four other children in addition to daughter Louisa, and Ferrin was doing the washing up.

"Willie it is Lewis," Molly said in an irratated voice.

"Yes dear," Ferrin sighed. Since she was with child again she had been very cranky and demanding.

He went and let Lewis in, he was in no mood for his lover.

"What brings you out here Lewis?" Ferrin asked wearily.

"Are you not the general of the fort?" Lewis asked wondering what had happened to the perky always ready for action soldier he had known.

"Of course I am, spit it out man I have things to do." Ferrin said but there was no bite to his words.

"Come have something to eat," Molly said.

"Thank you, Molly," Lewis said.

"So what is the problem, and why did you not go to my captain?" Ferrin asked.

"He is ugly," Lewis joked, then become serious and added, "and besides he refuses to help, Jamie has asked already."

"What has happened?" Ferrin asked.

"Julius Orphanington caught his wife with another man took their son and left the man is not kind to the boy and Delilah is worried to death, we have to find them and bring back her child. He is only five," Lewis said.

"I see and that man would be you?" Ferrin asked.

"Yes and I feel dreadful about it," Lewis sighed.

"Only the being caught part I would imagine, and the poor child," Ferrin said firmly.

"Yes, please William you must help, I beg of you," Lewis sighed.

"Willie Charlotte needs bathed and I need to eat would you mind?" Molly asked.

"Well Lewis are you traveling through or are you going to drag my husband off to a pub somewhere and not return home for a day?" Molly said.

"Actually I came here on business," Lewis said solemnly.

"Likely story as not, Louisa, you remember uncle Lewis?" Molly asked.

"Yes mummy, hello uncle Lewis how are you?" Louisa said smiling at Lewis.

"Good I am sorry I didn't bring you any pretties this time, I am here to see if your daddy will help me find a lost five year old boy." Lewis said.

"Father should help you, I would hate it if Will were to get lost, he is five too," Louisa announced.

"All right I will issue a warrent for questioning for Mr. Orphington," William sighed," I will send a courier to Swensens and someone can retrieve the child."

"Good that is all I can ask," Lewis said, "I need to get back to the search."

"I love you uncle Lewis be careful," Louisa said.

Lewis hugged Louisa before he left part of him always wanted to take her with him. He wondered if Molly would ever tell his daughter the truth.

"I love you too. Always careful my darling girl," he said and out the door he went.

Both Ferrin and his wife looking after him wishfully. Both thinking what might have been, but knowing in a way Lewis Landers would never have been what they wanted, just what they desired.
